Straight grained and quarter sawn they offer the greatest resistance to spliting, warping and cupping.
Douglas Fir is one of the most cost effective lath timbers and yet it offers technical benefits which out-shine some of the more expensive options. These include excellent rot resistance, insect repellency, low frequency of knots and a rough texture that creates a fantastic key.
We recommend spacing the laths between 6mm and 8mm apart. This allows a proper ‘nib’ of Lime Plaster to pass through affording a secure attachment.
6mm is the most historically accurate thickness for laths and allows greater flexibility of the lath without compromising strength. It also means a sensible thickness of plaster to cover the laths where the ends are overlapped to prevent cracking at joins
We recommend soaking the laths before attaching using either stainless ring shank nails or more traditional cut nails. We then further suggest wetting the laths before plastering to control suction and prevent overly rapid drying.
